  2. to Charles I from 1626. He sat as a member of
  3. both the Short and the Long Parliaments and,
  4. though sympathizing with the Parliamentary
  5. position, remained true to his allegiance: he
  6. died at his post as royal standard bearer at
  7. the Battle of Edgehill. His son Ralph
  8. (1613-96) supported the Parliamentarians. The
  9. Verney papers are a valuable record of this
  10. and later periods.
